art practice
The general themes of my artistic production are based on personal reflections regarding the paradoxical and mysterious nature of existence. Parallels are drawn between the unconscious and the esoteric (metaphysics, religion, superstition, mythology) then juxtaposed with the perceptible, physical realm. By pairing implicitly sensual materials—leather, hair, rubber—with text and/or materials alluding to the intangible, the pieces inhabit a charged ambiguity stemming from a fusion of opposites.
Common objects, with inherent symbolic associations, are often utilized and physically manipulated to shift their associative meanings. Each piece is meant to be "read" as unique and individual, intended to evolve beyond an imposed theme regardless of being conceptually connected. While the mysterious may never be fully named or known, the work serves as a vehicle directing our attention to the paradox of what makes us whole: reconciling the intangible aspects of who we are while inhabiting a physical body. My hope is to incite a visceral response from the viewer and inspire philosophical reflection regarding the co-existence of both our spiritual and mortal selves.
